Orlando Pirates Coach Ouaddou Defends Appollis' Reduced Playing Time
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has defended the decision to limit star midfielder Oswin Appollis's playing time, citing the need to prevent physical and mental exhaustion. The coach emphasized that the reduced minutes are a strategic move to ensure Appollis remains effective for crucial matches later in the season.
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has addressed media inquiries regarding star midfielder Oswin Appollis's limited appearances this season, framing the decision as a necessary measure to protect the player from physical and mental exhaustion.
Speaking ahead of the team’s Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinal match against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Ouaddou emphasized that Appollis is a vital asset who requires careful management. The Pirates coach described the attacking midfielder as a "diamond" and a masterclass in footballing quality, noting that his reduced minutes are strategic rather than indicative of a loss of form.
Appollis enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season after joining Orlando Pirates from Polokwane City. His performances, often alongside Relebohile Mofokeng before the latter’s transfer to Royale Union Saint-Gelloise in Belgium, were instrumental in the Buccaneers securing the Betway Premiership title, ending Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance. He also played a significant role for Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup.
However, Appollis has featured for only 90 minutes across two matches this season. He was utilized as a substitute in the recent Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs and in the MTN8 final against Sundowns. In both instances, Ouaddou noted that Appollis provided immediate impact, bringing "spark" and energy to the team upon his introduction.
"Appollis is one of the best players in South Africa, and he is full of quality. But he is human and not a robot," Ouaddou said. The coach drew on his own experience as a former professional player for club and country to contextualize the workload Appollis has endured.
"He had a fantastic first season with Pirates and a lot has changed for him. He then went to the FIFA World Cup, and he gave everything for his country," Ouaddou explained. "I was a player and can understand because as a former player, I played for my club and also for Morocco for six seasons."
Ouaddou clarified that the protection of Appollis is driven by the congested fixture list facing the defending champions. The coach stated that by managing Appollis's minutes now, the team ensures his availability and effectiveness for crucial matches later in the season.
"We are protecting our diamond because we have many games and we know that if we protect him, we give him this time, we know that he will be important for us," Ouaddou said. "We’ll benefit from this protection we’re giving him. But soon, you are going to see Appollis back."
The Pirates remain focused on their defense of the Carling Knockout Cup title as they prepare to face Sekhukhune United.
